The LIFE PowerLines4Birds project is implementing mitigation measures on medium and high voltage power lines to reduce bird mortality due to collision and electrocution.
By 2025, more than 110 km of power lines had already been corrected. But efforts will continue, which requires on-site planning and reconnaissance.
As part of the project, it is planned to bury more than 7 km of overhead power lines. This 100% effective measure to reduce mortality is planned for critical areas where mortality of some of the project's target species is recurrent.
Burying power lines is a solution that has been adopted in several European countries, and Portugal wants to follow this trend.
Through the LIFE PowerLines4Birds project, the partners are assessing the technical and socio-economic issues involved in implementing this measure. This planning requires visits to assess the situation in the field and establish contact with the owners and competent authorities for the appropriate authorizations.
