Coordination and project management

Proper technical management, the coordination of tasks and the internal communication between partners are essential for the successful implementation of the project. To this end, appropriate coordination and decision making mechanisms are implemented, as well as the provision of the necessary materials and human resources.

Preparatory actions

With the start of the project, several actions are planned that will serve as a basis to achieve the defined goals.

  • Establish the baseline population for the target species;
  • Identify priority sections of the power lines for intervention;
  • Promote training actions to improve the operational ability and the knowledge of the problem.

Conservation actions

These actions involve direct interventions in the electrical grid to reduce the risk of mortality due to interaction with power lines and other conservation measures that benefit the target species.

  • Implement protection measures for birds such as insulation of pylons and signaling with anti-collision devices;
  • Implement and test new methods that simultaneously reduce the collision and electrocution risk.;
  • Increase the distribution area of the roller by installing nest boxes in pylons safe from electrocution.

Improve governance and sustainability of the electrical network

The aim is to ensure the long term implementation of these conservation measures and the positive impact of the project’s actions in future interventions in the network.

  • Develop a pilot test to assess the environmental and social benefits of the measures implemented to protect birds;
  • Promote the engagement of professionals in the collection of mortality data through the development of new technological tools;
  • Promote community engagement through citizen science.

Monitoring and assessment

The aim is to monitor the effectiveness of the conservation measures.

  • Assess the national population trend of the target species during the implementation of the project;
  • Monitor the impact and effectiveness of mitigation measures applied to power lines identified as risky;
  • Monitor and assess the social and economic impacts of the project.

Project communication

To disseminate the project and its results, several communication materials will be produced. These materials can be used to raise awareness of several stakeholders. This also entails participation in national and international  events and conferences.

Sustainability, replication and exploitation of project results

It is intended for the project to continue after its end and that it can enable others (public and private entities, NGOs, etc). Therefore, actions to encourage the adoption and replication of good practices are foreseen, as well as knowledge sharing acquired throughout the project.
